Chewing
is a normal behavior in dogs. As puppies, they chew
because they’re teething and to explore the new world
around them. (Dogs learn a lot about their environment
through their mouths.) Adult dogs will chew to relieve
stress or boredom, or just for the sheer pleasure they
derive from this activity. Your goal shouldn’t be to
stop the dog from chewing, but to redirect chewing to
something appropriate like a rawhide bone or chew toy.
Chose a bone or toy that’s appropriate for the dog’s
size and activity level. Dogs that are aggressive
chewers should be given a durable, non-breakable bone
rather than rawhide.
When
the dog chews furniture or some other inappropriate
object, remove him from it, say “no” in a firm, but calm
voice, and give him a bone or chew toy. If the dog
continues to chew on an inappropriate object, spray the
object with a dog repellent, after first making sure
that this will not damage the object.
