Coprophagy, the act of
eating feces, is not unusual in the animal world. Wolves
do it in nature; so do coyotes, rabbits, and dogs. So
even though it may seem gross to us, it feels quite
normal for our pets, and in most cases it poses little
medical threat, although it can cause problems such as
roundworm. It is a habit that’s best broken.
This can be
done through training and by not allowing the dog access
to the litter box. You can buy a hooded litter box,
since the cover will keep the dog from getting at its
contents. You can also spray the litter box with a
product that will deter the dog, provided this is
accepted by the cat.
