RIDING IN CARS

Is it safe for my pet to ride in the car unrestrained?

The answer to this question is a definite "no." Allowing a dog to ride unrestrained in a vehicle is a danger not only to the pet, but also to all passengers in the car. If there's an accident, an unrestrained dog will often act as a projectile, flying into the back of a seat, a dashboard or windshield, running the risk of serious, or even fatal injury. A loose dog in a car can also become frightened, jumping and moving around, distracting the driver and causing a serious accident. You are better off restraining the dog with a harness, or putting him in a pet traveling seat or a traveling crate. Aside from being safer, this will probably make the pet more comfortable.

Caution: Always remove a dog’s collar before putting the pet in a metal crate. Collar and ID tags can become caught in a crate’s metal bars, choking the pet. Remember to put the collar back on the dog before taking the pet out of the crate.
