Like many animals, cats often prefer to drink from moving
water. This makes sense, since most water sources a cat
comes across in nature are moving. Plus, moving water
tends to be cleaner and freer of contaminants than
stagnant water, making it more appealing and healthier.
By swatting the water with his paw, your cat is probably
trying to create the movement that he is naturally prone
to look for in drinking water. Some cats will also swat
your bowls, because the movement this creates makes it
easier for them to see the water when you drink.
You
can address this issue by using a feline watering system
that constantly circulates drinking water. Since these
systems keep water moving, your cat will, in all
likelihood, no longer feel the need to swat his bowl.
Aside from providing the movement that cats prefer,
these automatic systems will help keep a cat’s water
fresh.
All cats should have access to clean fresh water at all
times. If a cat does have a tendency to spill his water
bowl, you should check on him regularly to make sure he
has something to drink. In such cases, you might also
want to leave several water bowls out for the cat.
