As cats age, they have
less bladder control, and they have to urinate more
often. They can also suffer bouts of disorientation. All
of these factors can play a role in the accidents your
cat is experiencing.
There are steps you can
take to help your pet. The first thing to do is take the
cat to the veterinarian to determine if there are any
underlying medical causes contributing to this problem
that can be addressed. You can also put more litter
boxes around the house. Since cats tend to urinate after
they wake up, place boxes by the areas where the cat
naps.
Since many older cats
suffer from arthritis, switch to a box with lower sides.
If you have been using a covered litter box, switch to
an uncovered model, since this will be easier for a
senior to enter and may be less stressful
psychologically for a frightened older pet.
When the cat does have
accidents, clean the area with an enzymatic stain and
odor remover that has been formulated for pets. General
household cleaners only mask the odor rather than remove
it. The trace of odor will stimulate the cat to urinate
on that spot again, which is why it’s important to
eradicate all traces of it.
