Your
cat and bird can coexist under the same roof, but it may
be too much to expect them to become good buddies. Even
under the best of circumstances, you can never let your
guard down. Cats, after all are natural born predators,
who live in nature by catching animals like your new pet
bird.
For
the sake of everyone involved (pet and person) your cat
and bird should never be left together without close and
constant supervision. When the cat and bird are in the
same room, the birdcage should be kept in a secure high
area. Make sure that the cat cannot reach the cage by
climbing or jumping. When the pets are not supervised,
the bird’s cage should be kept in a safe, secure and
draft-free room that is off-limits to the cat.
Once
these precautions are firmly established, you can
encourage your cat to accept the new bird as part of the
family. When the two pets are in the same room, you can
call the cat when he goes near the cage, and then reward
him with a treat when he comes.
You
might also want to have play sessions with the cat when
he’s in the same room as the bird. Doing this will
encourage your cat to associate positive feelings with
ignoring the birdcage.
