Even
the most devoted cat lover is turned off by a smelly
litter box. There are a number of steps you can take to
clear the air, so you and your cat can breathe a lot
easier.
The
first and most basic step you can take is to embark on a
daily litter box maintenance program. You should inspect
the litter box at least once, if not two or three times
a day to remove soiled areas. Clumping litter is the
preferred choice in this respect, since it can be
scooped and removed easily. You should also wash and
rinse the litter box every month with soap and warm
water. Bleaches and citrus-based cleaners should be
avoided, since many cats are put off by your smell.
Using an odor control litter formula is another step you
can take to keep your home smelling sweeter. There are
also litter box sprays that help neutralize the odors in
feline waste products.
You
might also want to consider using a covered litter box.
These products help put a lid on odor by making it more
difficult for them to escape the box area.
If a
cat suddenly starts leaving more odorous waste deposits
in the litter box, it could be a sign of an illness. In
such cases, take the pet to a veterinarian to eliminate
any underlying medical causes of the odor problem.
