It’s a good idea to wash a cat’s litter box every month.
This helps combat the spread of bacteria and the odors
that go along with them. However do not use bleach. Many
cats have a strong aversion to bleach scent, and even a
trace of this disinfectant might be enough to dissuade
your pet from using the litter box.
You should allow the litter box to dry in the sun and
open air to eliminate the maximum number of germs. Of
course in order to do this, you will need to have a
backup litter box. Disposable litter boxes fill this
backup roll very well.
A litter box will be less likely to stain, and be easier
to clean next time, if you apply a non-stick odor
control spray to it before refilling it with litter.
This leaves a protective film on the surface of the box
making waste products less likely to stick. Another way
to protect the box is to use a bag liner.
