Pet
Supplies Plus offers a wide variety of litters,
including products for multiple cat households and extra
odor control. There are litters made of clay, corn,
grains, recycled paper and other material. Some litters
are fine grained, others are coarse. There are also
flushable litters and scented litters. The table below
shows the comparative features of different litters.
Ultimately, though, it is your cat who will be the final
judge of which litter works best in this particular
case. A litter must be accepted by the cat to avoid
inappropriate soiling. If you are undecided about which
litter to buy, take home two different products and use
them in side-by-side litter boxes. Chances are that your
cat will let everyone know which litter is preferred by
using only one of the boxes.
Clumping (Clay Based):
Urine forms easily removable clumps after coming into
contact with this litter. The clumps should be removed
daily, and the entire litter box should be emptied and
new litter added once every 2-4 weeks. This litter
provides good odor control, but it is not dust free, so
it should not be used for cats with respiratory issues.
It is not biodegradable, and cannot be flushed down the
toilet.
Clumping (Natural Grain Based):
Urine forms easily removable clumps after coming into
contact with this litter. The clumps should be removed
daily, and the entire litter box emptied and new litter
added once every 2-4 weeks. This litter provides good
odor control, and since it does not create dust it can
be used with cats that have allergies or respiratory
issues. It is biodegradable and can be flushed down the
toilet.
Non-Clumping (Clay Based):
This litter absorbs urine, but does not form clumps.
Soiled litter should be removed daily. The entire litter
box should be emptied once a week and new litter should
be added. Some varieties are dust free. It cannot be
flushed.
Crystals:
Made
from various formulas using sand/silica, this litter
does not clump, but it is extremely absorbent and
excellent at controlling odors. Soiled sections should
be removed daily, and the entire litter box should be
emptied with new litter added once a month. This litter
is dust-free, making it easy on the respiratory system.
Some cats seem to prefer its texture, while others find
the crystals too hard on their paws. It is not
flushable.
Crystal & Clumping Clay Mix:
This type of products strives to combine the best of
both worlds It is a mixture of clay and crystal. Enough
crystals are put in to absorb and deodorize urine,
without interfering with the clumping properties of
clay. It is not flushable.
Paper:
Recycled paper is used to make this litter. It absorbs
about three times the moisture of clay, but is
non-clumping. Soiled sections should be removed daily,
and a complete litter change should be made every week.
Dust-free, this litter is good for cats with allergies
and respiratory ailments. It is not flushable. Unlike
other litters, paper products absorb litter from the
bottom-up. So, always check deep into the litter to find
soiled sections.
