It’s understandable that you are concerned; a cat that chews
electrical cords is not only endangering herself, she
can also start a fire. You should address this issue
promptly. The first step is to make as many electrical
cords as inaccessible as possible to the cat. However,
no one is going to be able to “cat proof” every
electrical cord in a home. This is why indoor cat
repellent should be applied to all electrical cords,
including those that have been “blocked off” to cats.
If a cat persistently goes after cords in a specific area,
try using an automatic deterrent spray. These products
automatically emit a sharp, sudden spray of gas when
they detect movement. The spray is harmless, odorless
and it doesn’t stain, but it will scare the cat,
convincing her to stay away from a given area.
Making electrical cords inaccessible or unappealing to cats
is a good first step to stopping a cat from engaging in
potentially harmful behavior. After doing this, though,
address the root cause of the cord chewing.
Chances are your cat is chewing cords because she’s bored or
anxious. Both issues can be addressed by providing the
cat with constructive outlets for chewing and playing.
Try giving the cat interesting toys and indoor catnip.
This will keep the cat occupied, and the mental
stimulation will probably help to alleviate boredom and
anxiety.
