The practice of eating feces, cacapolia, is
not uncommon in nature. Still, you are right to want to
put a stop to this behavior. Aside from being unpleasant
for us to see, the practice of using the litter box as a
buffet tray poses a health risk to the dog, especially
if he ingests indigestible clumping litter.
In terms of stopping the unwanted eating, you can, depending
on the size and strength of their canine friend, erect a
barrier such as a gate that makes the litter box
inaccessible to their dog, while still allowing the cat
to pass. Another alternative is to use a covered litter
box. This will make it more difficult for all but the
most determined dogs to get inside.
Another option is to give your dog a chewable tablet that
curbs the cacapolia drive, making the litter box
contents less appealing to the dog.
You can also give the dog-safe tablet remedies that
discourage cacapolia by making feces taste unpleasant.
