Bedding

Selecting the right bedding is essential to the comfort and health of small animals. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

Wood shavings, such as aspen and pine, make good bedding for most small animals, as do crushed corn cob and pre-packaged paper-based products. Exercise caution when using cedar bedding, since cedar oils can cause respiratory problems in many small animals.

Do not use cotton, wool, towels or any other fabric as bedding. If the fabric is swallowed, it can cause an intestinal blockage in the small animal. The notable exception to this rule is the ferret, which enjoys having a cloth or towel as a "sleeping blanket."

Remove debris and fecal matter from bedding every day. Regardless of the type of bedding used, it should be changed at least once a week. Most bedding materials will degrade if left in the cage too long.

Safety Note:

Never give hamsters, gerbils or other rodents cloth for chewing. The animal can strangle on the threads.
