Terrarium Humidity Sources
Reptiles that come from humid tropical regions and damp woodlands need to have high humidity levels maintained in their terrariums. Humidity is critical to the health of these animals, making it easier for them to shed their skins. Here are some general guidelines for maintaining humid conditions:
Water Spray -- The simplest way to keep a tank comfortably humid is to spray it with a fine water mist several times a day.
Aquarium Heaters -- A terrarium’s humidity level can be raised by putting an aquarium heater in the water pool, if it is deep enough.
Ventilation -- Poor ventilation in a humid terrarium can lead to mold and fungi growth, and create conditions that are conducive to disease. Pet owners who want to maintain humid terrariums should select tanks that have ample ventilation holes in the top and sides. If added ventilation is needed, a small aquarium air pump can be used to bring extra air into the terrarium.
Humidity Gauge -- All terrariums housing tropical or damp woodland reptiles should have a humidity gauge, so conditions can be monitored regularly.
