Housing Basics
Terrarium Basics
A glass tank makes an ideal terrarium for most herptiles that are commonly kept as pets. A secure screen or glass cover should be affixed to the top of the tank to prevent animals from escaping. These tanks are "Terrariums,” but many people also refer to them as "Vivariums." The two words can be used interchangeably.
Selecting The Tank Shape
The shape of the terrarium should fit the needs of a particular herptile species. Arboreal (tree-dwelling) reptiles should be kept in tall tanks with climbing branches, while terrestrial (non-climbing) reptiles should be kept in more shallow terrariums that are horizontally-shaped.
Tank Covers
A secure cover should be put on all terrariums to prevent reptiles and amphibians from getting out of their housing. Tank covers should be made of heavy wire mesh screen or sturdy plastic with perforations to allow air to circulate in the tank. Covers should also have openings to allow the installation of lighting, heaters, and other equipment.
