Aquariums To Go: Taking Fish With You When You Move

Congratulations, you’re moving to a new home. Now what are you going to do about your fish? Don’t worry. There’s no need to leave your aquatic friends behind. By following a few simple steps, you can take your fish with you, whether you’re moving across town, or to a different state.

     - Pack your fish securely in several layers of plastic bags filled with water from their current        aquarium tank. If your fish have spines that can puncture a bag, use a plastic container instead.        (You can also transport your biological filtration medium in a plastic bag filled with tank water.)
     -
Place the bags with your fish in a polystyrene box or cooler, and position newspapers between        the bags to protect them and maintain a constant temperature.
     -
If outdoor temperatures are extreme, pre-heat or pre-cool your vehicle to minimize stress on the        fish.
     -
When your fish arrive at their new home, set up your aquarium tank immediately. If possible, the        new tank should be 60% to 75% filled with water from the transport bags.
     -
Don’t give your fish a housewarming dinner. You should wait for 12 hours after the move has        been completed before feeding your fish again.

FISH THAT ARE TRANSPORTED PROPERLY CAN SURVIVE A JOURNEY OF UP TO 12 HOURS
