Five Steps To Fighting Fleas & Ticks
Summer is a fun time of year for pets. Unfortunately, it’s also the season that fleas and ticks like best. You can help your pet win the battle against these pesky insects by following this simple five step formula:
1. Keep your pet healthy and well-nourished. Dogs and cats with nutritional deficiencies are more prone to skin and coat problems, which can compound the itching and dermatitis caused by flea and tick infestation.
2. Keep pets clean. If your pet is infested, a good flea and tick control shampoo will be your first line of defense against these insects. Shampooing will often eliminate adult fleas and ticks from your pet’s coat. If your pet has a heavier infestation, it might be necessary to bathe him in a flea or tick dip, which is stronger than a shampoo.
3. Continue to protect your pet with a collar. After your pet’s coat has been cleaned, buckle on a flea/tick collar for on-going protection.
4. Eliminate fleas and ticks from your pet’s environment. Removing fleas and ticks from your pet’s coat often isn’t enough by itself. If these pests have set up residence in your home, you’ll have to eliminate them with powder, spray or fogger applied to your house and yard.
5. Provide localized relief with sprays and powders. A variety of spot relief sprays are available to relieve the itching and irritation cause by infestation on localized areas of your pet’s body. You can also give your pet a “dry bath” with a flea or tick powder.
