Lovebird (agapornis sp.)

The following is intended only as a starter guideline. Pet Supplies "Plus" strongly recommends that you purchase books, visit informative websites and join a club if possible to learn more about your new pet. You should also find a veterinarian who is familiar with this species, and take your pet in for regular checkups

Origin:
There are nine species of lovebirds of which eight are native to Africa and one is native to Madagascar.  In the wild their common name is derived from the fact that they are commonly found in breeding pairs.  However, your lovebird was born in captivity in the USA.

Size:
Lovebird species range in size from 4 inches to 7 inches.  Females are typically larger and may be more aggressive than males.

Caging
Lovebirds require a cage that is at least 18 inches tall and has a floor space of 2 square feet.  Square or rectangular cages are preferable to dome-shaped cages.  The metal bars should be no more than ¾-inch apart and the perches should be at least ½-inch in diameter.  The cage should have a grate over the bottom which separates the bird from feces.

The cage should be placed in a location which will allow the bird to frequently see his owners.

Substrate
A substrate that is easily cleaned such as newspaper is ideal.  Corn cob or crushed walnut shell may also be used.  The substrate should be changed daily.

Temperature
Lovebirds will adjust to room temperature, but extreme heat and cool should be avoided.  The cage should be placed in a location that is free from drafts and direct sunlight.

Water
Lovebirds must have access to fresh, clean drinking water at all times.  The water dish should be cleaned and refilled daily.  Lovebirds should also be supplies with a larger water dish in which to bath so they do not soil the drinking water.

Diet
Lovebirds require a varied diet.  They feed on vitamin fortified seeds, commercial pelleted diets, and fresh fruits and vegetables.  In addition, lovebirds may also be offered human food such as rice, cereal, and pasta.  Avoid avocados, chocolate, alcohol, and caffeine as these are toxic to the bird.
