Sizing Cages
It is important to select a cage that is the right size for your pet, so your bird will be comfortable and have enough room to get regular exercise. A properly-sized cage will also contribute to a pet bird's feeling of psychological well-being. Here’s what to look for when choosing a cage:
- The cage should be large enough to allow a bird to stretch and flap its wings without touching the sides. A bird should be able to sit on perches without its head touching the top of the cage or its tail touching the floor.
- Cage bars should be spaced narrowly enough to prevent birds from sticking their heads through and injuring themselves.
Bars should never be more than 1/2" apart in a small bird’s cage, and no more than 1" apart in a large bird’s cage.
- Horizontal cages make it possible for the bird to flutter from perch to perch, so they provide more opportunity for exercise than vertical cages.
